The Obamas by Jodi Kantor
When Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election, I became interested in the man, his life and his ideals. Prior to that, I was mainly intrigued by the fact that he was the Democratic Nominee. I didn’t really believe that the Americans would vote him into office. I mean no offense to my American friends but it seemed highly unlikely even with the wave of excitement surrounding his “Yes, We Can” campaign.
Since the United States affects Canada in numerous ways, I began to take note of his policies and his reactions to situations. Not to mention his ideological views which were and are most likely unattainable.
His wife was new to me. Michelle did not really grab my attention until they were settled in the White House. The United States had a First Lady like none other before her. Modern, determined, self-assured and most important a mind of her own.
When I was offered the opportunity to review this book, I jumped at the chance! It was a book I had planned on purchasing myself.
The introduction in the book alone gives you a clue to what is coming and who both of The Obamas are and what they are working for.
It begins where it should, at the beginning of what is to be a unique although somewhat rocky relationship. Their views and ideas of their relationship seemed worlds apart. This book focuses on two individuals both somewhat nieve. The author shines her light on their accomplishments as well as their failures both politically and personally.
I can’t say I was overly fond of Michelle to begin with. She seemed harsh. However, as I continued to read I began to take on a new perspective. This is a woman I could be friends with.
Jodi Kantor takes you through a families struggles of being catipulted overnight into one of the most prestigious postions. She helps you to understand the personal and emotional changes that had to happen to survive. How they got there, where they are and where they are headed.
The book is in no way a tribute to or a politcal stance on The Obamas rather a human story. With that in mind, I am pleased to say that I am able to offer one of you the chance to WIN your own copy.
Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book in return for writing a review. The opinions, however, are my own. I have not been compensated in any other manner.

I would also be interested in this Obama book. I constantly see U.S. people posting on forums about hating him, hate what he’s done etc etc. Makes me wonder how someone who is hated so much, can get voted into power.
