The Health Benefits of Red Wine – Moderate Consumption

Just before dinner on a Friday evening, my husband will pour me a glass of Red Wine. I’m a fan of a good Shiraz. I like my red wine to have that little “pop” to it.

This act, this one glass of wine, signals the end of the work week. For both of us. Yes, as a blogger, I do spend a little time at the computer on the weekend. However, only an hour or two. Everyone needs their down time and their family time. Whether you go out to work or work at home.

Now to my choice of beverage. As I stated, I like a glass of Shiraz. There are other reasons though that I choose red wine. Health benefits!

I figure, if I’m going to have a drink with my supper, why not have something that benefits you at the same time. So here are some reasons to have a glass of red wine 2 or 3 times a week.

Resveratrol – An antioxidant that can be found in powerful amounts in the skin and seeds of red grapes.

Can help lower risk of certain types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, dementia, alzheimers and can also help lower levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

Research is being done to try and isolate specifically how resveratrol works. Tests for “side effects” and “long term” effects are needed. Perhaps one day there will be a drug Resveratrol.

Prostate Cancer – Men who drink 4 or more glasses of red wine per week have been shown to reduce risk of prostate cancer by 50%. The most agressive forms of prostate cancer were reduced by 60%.

Sleep – Red wine contains melatonin which regulates the body clock.

Blood Clots - Red wine produces anti-clotting agents. Light consumption of red wine can help lower the protein fibrinogen which promotes blood clot formation.

Kidney Stones - red wine reduces the risk of kidney stone formation.

Please remember: Moderate consumption and NEVER Drink and Drive!

  1. oooo – I love how I have an excuse to drink a good glass of red wine once in a while! The problem with me is that I am the only person who drinks it in our house and I don’t want a whole bottle to go to waste so I don’t drink it often. When I do, I LOVE a good Cab-Shiraz the best!
