Some of our fruits and vegetables can be dangerous to our health. Yes, you read that right. Certain everyday items are poisonous if we don’t eat or cook them properly. Here are some harmful fruits and veggies that you should be careful with.
Nutmeg is a common household spice. However, it contains something called myristicine, which is psychoactive. Too much of this can cause vomiting, sweating, dizziness, hallucinations and headache. In the average recipe there is not enough nutmeg to cause any harm. The problem is that our teenagers have discovered a “high” they can get from nutmeg. It’s highly dangerous and has had terrible outcomes.
Lima beans contain limarin which can make you terribly ill. Never eat these raw. Always cook well before consuming. They are not a vegetable you would throw raw into a salad. Cook a minimum of ten minutes before eating.
Apples, cherries, apricots, peaches and plums all contain cyanogenic glycosides which creates cyanide in the pits. Swallowing one or two is not harmful as we can handle minor amounts. Chewing them on the other hand is much more dangerous which is why children should be kept away from fruits that are not de-pitted. Choking is not the only danger lurking here.
