First of all, let’s define what a stroke actually is. It’s an attack on your brain much as you would define a heart attack as an attack on your heart. This is extremely serious and needs medical attention immediately. The sooner the better.
Warning signs can appear as soon as 7 days prior to a stroke and can be preceeded by mini strokes. Mini strokes are similiar but only last a few minutes.
Signs
sudden numbness or weakness of face on one side of the body (this is usually the most noticeable sign)
Confusion or probelems understanding
speech problems
vision problems
dizziness, difficulty walking or loss of balance
severe headache
All of these are sudden occurences.
What to Do
Seek medical attention immediately. If you are unsure if someone is having a stroke, you can give them the STRoke test.
Ask them to Smile – does their face look uneven?
Ask them to Talk and repeat a phrase – Does it sound right?
Assk them to Raise their arms – does one side drift downwards?
Call 911 and follow directions from operator
The faster a person receives treatment, the better their chances at a full recovery.
