How much do you enjoy your coffee? There are days when I can take it or leave it and then there are “those” days. It’s not the caffeine boost that I’m craving, it’s the bold flavour that no other drink can offer. You take that first sip, inhale the aroma and say aaaahh! There’s just something about the taste and smell that says ok, you can do this.
Occasionally, before bed, I’d love to have that rich flavour. I’d like to close my eyes and savour it. However, even a decaf coffee can affect your sleep. So I guess it’s simply “no coffee”. Or is it?
I was sent a package of Counting Sheep Coffee. Okay, really!? It’s a new one to me. I know of teas that are made with special herbs and specifically for helping you sleep, but coffee? Apparently so! This decaff coffee was on Dragon’s Den and contains a natural herbal sedative called Valerian Root. I’ve never heard of it, so I took to the internet to find out a little more. Turns out this is a perennial flowering plant and at one time the flower extracts were used for perfume. The root is native to Europe and Asia and has been used for hundreds of years for anxiety, sleep disorders, stomache problems and more.
I decided that the long weekend was the perfect time to try this coffee out. It gave my husband and I three nights to test the flavour and the coffee’s ability to help make us drowsy and fall asleep.
So the first thing you notice when you open a bag of the ground coffee is the smell. That rich, aromatic smell that you just want to stand there and inhale. There’s no “medicinal” type of smell and the flavour is strong and bold. It’s definitely a cup of coffee. Within about 20 minutes of finishing my cup, I began to feel really relaxed. I wouldn’t say that my eyes were getting heavy or anything, I simply felt relaxed. That comfortable feeling of being able to lay down and close my eyes.
Tension is one of the main reasons that I can have troubles falling asleep and this just seemed to wash it away. I was kind of surprised and also wondered why noone else had thought of making coffee this way. It’s not only mornings when people want to taste great flavours!
