Married For 35 Years! What’s My Secret?

I’ve been married for a long time. In fact, it’s been thirty five years. Yet, somehow, it doesn’t seem all that long. If it wasn’t for my fully grown children and the mirrors in my home, I could fool myself into believing it’s only been five. So, what’s my secret? First and foremost, he’s my best friend. We truly enjoy spending time together. We don’t take separate vacations, we don’t want to. It’s wonderful sharing the same experiences.

He understands my humour. Sure, he rolls his eyes at me occasionally, but he’s smiling too. I have some bad habits, so does he. I’m not perfect and I don’t expect him to be either.

That doesn’t mean we don’t argue, we are human after all. We’re individuals but we compliment each other. Being married for thirty five years has had it’s up and downs. At times it’s been frustrating. Other times, the joy overflows. We’ve celebrated so many things together. The birth of our children and grandchildren, our first home, amazing trips, friends, accomplishments and so much more. We’ve cried together over the loss of loved ones, lost jobs and failures.

Most of all though, we work together. We work at marriage and don’t take our time together for granted.

I love my husband deeply.

My MIL and I were just talking about this and I think young people look at their elders and think they can have everything we have, as in homes, cars etc. Its a very different world and a man can’t have a career and buy a brand new house, car and support a wife and kids at home. (Thats what my dad was able to do) My husband and I have both worked all of our lives, took turns making sure one person was a nigh shift worker so that someone was here for the kids. Sacrificed a lot of things (mine two kids are both gone to two different provinces then what I live in and I consider that a SUCCESS, as it means I raised TWO ADULTS). We did manage to buy a house on our small wages, and this is the first year we’ve ever owned a brand new car. And we’re not young by any means (50’s). We’ve been married 27yrs I think it is and been together longer then that. CONGRATS on your 35!!

    • Thanks Bina! We worked so hard to get where we are today, as well. It’s not an easy route, to be sure.

  2. Congrats on 35 years! That’s an amazing accomplishment in this day and age. I agree so much that your spouse should be your best friend. It’s the only way to survive all the ups and downs that come with sharing a life together.

PS: You two look great together!

  3. Congrats on 35 Years
